Women In Leadership - Week 10 (which I accidentally deleted)
I could not get notes on all the speakers but we had 3.
Micky Brown is one that left a lasting impression. She raised 7 1/2 million with people for the YWCA. She said how to reach out to the difference. She mentioned Benjamin Franklin, Penn State crime. She's on the Supreme Court . She went to Law school and studied at Ohio State University.
Week 11 and the Final week of actual class :)
So these last few sessions have been the ones that went by the quickest, which seems to always be the case.
We had a speaker by the name of Mary. She had been at Batelle for 20 years, she never thought that she'd end up being the head of Batelle. She managed the IT group and the facilities group, she was also responsible for all the engineering.
There are branches all over the world, including India. She managed a security team along the way too.
Batelle does a lot of work for the government. She was offered the position 8 years ago when she graduated from college with a degree in finance. Her first job was a receptionist, she worked there for 3 years and then moved to Columbus. Then came Batelle and then her current job.
She was told that she was originally going to work with Switzerland. Since it didn't work out as planned she ended up working with Southern Ohio. She did a study on the damage that trucks do on roads.
She realized through all the work that life is all about " Team Work" , Flexibility, Continual Learning, Project skills and more. A problem she faced was the lack of women mentors, there were plenty of men but there was a scarcity of women.
Her boss had once said to never enter his office without a pen and a paper in her hand, this was demeaning for her.
Wise President of Batelle was something she still has trouble believing.
She said that the experience of her father was one reason she ended up where she is and it would be something that gets us somewhere good, someday.
Alison was our next speaker and she studied at the university of Virginia. She majored in finance, went to NY and it was a NO NO, went to Atlanta and it was a NO NO, went to Boston and it was YES!
She went to Harvard and got her masters. She and her husband found amazing opportunities in Cleveland. There were not many ladies at the senior ranks where she was working. She spent 3 years in North Carolina doing cost accounting.
She got to work with both people at the executive level and at the plant level.
She realized being transparent was the best way to work. MID 90's her husband got a opportunity down in Columbus. She got an opportunity in Pittsburgh and she became a telecommuter. It was a lot of work and a couple of years and kids popped up. She wasn't willing to give up her personal life for her job so she spoke to her boss and he made a job vacancy for her close by and convenient. She did this for 5 years until her youngest was in kindergarten and then went back and requested for another job.
So this did not work out and she ended up doing networking. Then discovered a place called Tech Columbus, which is where she is currently working.
Elaine was the third speaker. She works in the airport division. She works for Port Columbus and she told us that most of the large airports in America such as New York Airport, Chicago, LA etc are run by women. She's the CEO of Port Columbus and is doin very well. I did not get much info on her.
Week 15 we had 3 speakers again.
first it was Annie. When she was in high school she worked in retail. Her first desire was to be a psychologist, but the guy she was dating was the founder of Donatos who was our third speaker, Jane's father.
They got married after she graduated. When she was working part time at Donatos, three men decided that she did not need a pay. Anyway she worked and she started doing real estate, fired 2 people and made Jane( her daughter) interview for the job. 13 years she worked at Donatos and then decided she like to be a hypnosis, so then she got her masters in psychology.
I can not remember our second speakers name, but she was Jane's cousin. Her dad is Jane's dad's brother. She started as a science major. She worked at the cafeteria on saturday and sunday mornings, then she worked at school on friday and saturday nights. When she was 9 she started selling pop at a work site. Her mum was an independent contractor, she became an industrial hygienist. She worked part time for 3 years after having her 2 sons. Her husband now works for her and her sons work in the family business too. Donatos does not really have an hierarchy and that set up works fine for everyone.
Our final speaker was Jane. She started work when she was 11. She went to Ohio State University, She started something to do with organizing. In 1999 McDonald's approached Donatos. She called up Chick - Fil - A and asked if they wanted to combine as they turned down the offer McDonald's offered as they wanted to buy over Donatos.
They went about it for 3 months and decided not to sell.
They got a new CEO and she hated him, that was the worst period for her because her dad and her siblings left the business and she was alone with her horrible boss.
She then realized the difference between working for family and working for a complete and total stranger.
9 months and a new guy came in as CEO and he loved her. All went well and she still works there and she loves it.
Donatos now had a 186 stores.
